"Sport" is about personal achievement - not belittling of others

Boy, are you right! So, you guys need to stop doing it! Note that I didn't address that to you, Big Bad IP man, only the self righteous jerk who sneered at all the other people doing "a job that no one wants".

Wanna know who's doing the really hard job in Aviation? Look at the line A&P's. The ones who work for me - GA guys all - are incredible. And these days they show up with a 4 year tech degree - no more 18 month Repairman certificates. They work crap conditions all the time, and take nothing but s**t from angry owners. And they know a LOT more about the airplanes than 99% of the pilots they deal with. You excepted of course, right?

Actually, the demise of the "stewardess" predates PC. There was a redefining of the role in the late 70s and early 80s that the FAA initiated which reemphasized safety vs. service. It was not simply the gender issue. Flight Attendants' role is primarily safety and it is not considered lightly by the FAA or the airlines.

1. We still all know what a stewardess is.

2. I think that the real reason for the name change was to give cover to the faggy guys who wanted to be stewardesses.

I only flew America Worst once. It took me 18 hours to complete what should have been a 1 1/2 hour flight. Never again.

I'll advise you that when I went thru USN flight school from 1982-84, the wash-out rate (flunk-out rate) was nearly 70%.

Not surprising since the F-14 is such a bitch of a plane with its compressor stalls and all. But the fact is that 13 year olds DO learn to fly planes, just not tempermantal ones.

The breathalyzers for both of these pilots was .08 according to news reports I have read today. That is not drunk.

I thought the FAA max allowed is .04%, though I would think all airlines have a zero tolerance rule. The reason it is so low is that at higher altitudes, even in pressurized aircraft, the air has less oxygen concentration which makes alcohol much more of an impairment. Someone somewhat sober on the ground may make really stupid mistakes once they get one mile up.

There is no such thing as a "stewardess" and hasn't been for 25 years.

The uniformed lady who brought me my Bloody Mary on my last flight seems to think she's a stewardess. (And for my money, she gave a very convincing impersonation.)

Would you take a flight on a 747 with a thirteen-year old pilot?

Depends on the circumstances. Better a conscientious 13 year old than a drunken 50 year old.

No one wants to have a drunk pilot, regardless of age. Once again, would you take a flight on a commercial jet with a thirteen old pilot.

As long as he brought his own phone book to sit on...

I'm an aeronautical engineer by training who flew satellites with USAF at AFSCF in Sunnvale, I have a brother who's a pilot of United, and a sister who's an ..ahem.. Flight Attendant for American. I chuckle at everything you're all saying - because I've heard all these arguments in my own family - and all points (so far) are dead on.

You do not know what you are talking about. Quit while you are ahead.

Well, since you say I'm ahead, maybe I will quit. But I wasn't dumping on airline pilots - just saying they aren't rocket scientists (and neither am I).

what kind of idiot would NOT try to get the job?

Hi, I am an idiot and I got a PPL with the intention of going on to ATP and CFI. But I got bored with it because it was not intellectually stimulating enough. Pilots really are glorified bus drivers.

I have to wonder why professional pilots complain so much, and if they really are so professional and hard to replace, why do they need a union?

By the way, I refuse to try and reason with wanna-be astronuts and others that refer to FAs as "stewardess"

I keep hearing the voice of "Cliff Clavin" the postman from "Cheers" when I read the comments of the wanna-be "engineer" (right) on this thread.

An admitted Private Pilot knows what he is talking about with regard to aviation? One does not have to be a professional pilot to know about the industry - but being a private pilot are not even entry level credentials for cognitive discussion - and certainly not for name-calling. Intentions are good for little. What have you done?
