It also breaks up the flow of the pledge IMO. I think that it sounds better without "under god" -- that phrase creates an awkward pause that wasn't there before.

Exactly, plus it adds a divisive tone that has no place in what is supposed to be a unifying statement. Unless of course we're saying that Buddhists, Hindus, Wiccans, Zoroasterians, agnostics, and atheists aren't "real" Americans.

Or think about this.....a Moslem can say it without prejudice ("Allah", after all, is Arabic for "God") and an Orthodox Jew might have qualms speaking the name of God. (okay...I'm modell stirring here....hehe).
