I saw an excellent film a few weeks ago that I can't find in my Movie Hound guide. I think it's called "The Story of G.I. Joe", based on Ernie Pyle's war correspondence. It starred Burgess Meredith as Ernie Pyle and it was the movie that made Robert Mitchum a star. Ernie Pyle was killed in the Pacific while they were making this movie.
For a WWII movie made during WWII, it was a really, really good film.

Robert Mitchum's character in "The Story of G.I. Joe" was based on my Uncle, Capt. Henry Waskow. Ernie Pyle was present when they brought Captain Waskow's body down the mountain on a mule in Italy. Ernie's story about that was his most famous of the war.
The movie had been tied up in an estate dispute for decades - it's nice to see it out again - I bought it on DVD from Amazon the week it came out.
