We had the electronic voting machines BEFORE the 2000 election - no chads!
Fifty years ago, I was old enough to go into the Marine Corps, but not old enough to vote for Ike in the Presidential election of that fall.
I managed to meet President Ford when he visited Winston-Salem, he stopping right in front of me, and with the crowd pushing us against the rope, my daughter (then 12) reached her hand up and tugged at his sleeve.
The Secret Service man almost hacked her arm off!!
(You-no-touch-my-President!)
President Ford was gracious enough to reach down and take her hand and ask, "How're you doin' Sweetie?" and then shook my hand before angling up to the podium.
(Yes - this Marine arrived hours early, scouted and calculated the exact spot where he'd go down the rope line and then divert to the stand..:))
Then, as I've oft related, in February 2000 when GWB stopped here to speak, I'd created on the computer a lapel sign that said, VETERAN FOR BUSH.
When he came down into the crowd, I hustled to a spot with only two Secret service men between us. He signed the invitation to the event I held up - and then when he turned to go to my right, stopped to speak to me.
I began to point to the sign and say I'd made it, and he interrupted me to say pointedly, "I NOTICED IT EARLIER!" (from his stage, 12' away), whipped up his pen and signed it on my body!!
I have two frames full of pictures of that and newspaper articles in three places in the local paper - and saw it on Fox News Channel 3 days later.
Determination works!
South Carolina proudly gave him his first Primary Win - over McCain, garnering 50% of the veteran vote in the state - and it was a straight shot on to the Presidency from there.
Is this a great country, or what?!
You got that right, Lady! And, we'll turn it around to the Right even further to make it even better.
