Apparently this trip with his wife has been scheduled for some time. He addressed it in open court. Besides, he'll be back before they are finished.

So he's not going to be there for a big part of the defense's case? I don't understand that. If he knew that he had prior commitments, why wasn't another judge chosen, one that could sit right through the case?
I don't expect you to know the answers to these questions, by the way. I'm just wondering ;-)

Apparently this trip with his wife has been scheduled for some time. He addressed it in open court. Besides, he'll be back before they are finished. In fact, he stated that both sides were aware of this trip and his acceptance of this case was with the agreement he would be gone that week. But I didn't hear there would be a substitute judge. I thought he said -- to the jurors -- there would be no court during that time. I think it's July 14-19 or so.
