June 23, 2002 -- WHEN the history of today's liberalism is written, the writers may marvel at that political persuasion's remarkable reversal of convictions regarding persuasion. Nothing more tellingly illuminates the contemporary liberal mind than the retreat from the defense of First Amendment guarantees of free speech.

How many times have you heard liberals say "You can't say that!"? It's their mantra.

If you ever want to see a potential tyrant, look at a liberal.

George Will isn't too far off the mark in describing the consquences of constitutionally forcible rape. Namely that the Left will do all it can to silence its opponents. After all if it comes between choosing unrestricted freedom of speech or keeping money out of politics, the Left has decided the former is a luxury. Free speech is an act both corruptive and subversive. It corrupts by exposing people to dangerous ideas. It subverts by frustrating the ability of the liberal class and its political brethen to shutdown any speech they don't agree with. For the Left speech must be regulated both in order to keep people from competing with it and to make sure the only voices that get to be heard are ones that happen to back its agenda. The Four Comrades have effected a revolution in American government and all without formally repealing the First Amendment --- but it has for all practical purposes, thanks to their evil genius, been effectively gagged.
