What joke? In order to convict in the senate, 67 Senators are needed. The GOP had 54-55. As one Democrat Senator said, "we don't care if you have Clinton on tape raping a Nun, we're not going to vote to convict."
End of story. You can bitch all you want, but that's the facts jack.
What's wrong with you?
I simply replied to someone I respect and admire on this forum as to my actions and for some reason you were compelled to take issue with my choice of action. Oh well, I think that is your prerogative as well. But you really didn't need to give me a history lesson. I think I knew the circumstances involved at the "Impeachment Trial" that wasn't. And the GOP sure gave the DemocRATs the cover they needed by not having a real trial, with real evidence and real witnesses where the DemocRATs would have had to stand in the kitchen and take the heat for supporting a President that subverted the law, perjured himself, and suborned others to perjury. Heck they didn't have to as we had a Republican Majority leader that gave them all the cover they needed.
Of course the odds are there would have never been a conviction as the numbers to convict weren't there, but hey we will never really know as there was never really any trial. Majority Leader Lott made sure of that and was backed by a majority of the GOP Senators.
But thanks for your pithy remarks, jack!
The Republicans did not allow a full trial and did not allow chinagate evidence to be brought forward. the Republicans (according to Shippers) did NOT want a real trial.
THOSE are the facts, and the reason why I, too, left the GOP after the farse of a trial.
The Republican leadership is too connected and too similar to their Democratic counterparts to ever be trusted again. Ever.
My recollection this statement or a variation of it was made in the pre-trial meeting by Ted Stevens-R-Alaska who voted not guilty as well. Can anyone look in Schippers book and confirm this?

Sen. Ted Stevens
NM: Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens you revealed in your book that he was the guy who told you, "I don't care if you've got Clinton on videotape raping a woman then shooting her dead, you're not gonna get 67 votes." Anything to add there?
SCHIPPERS: Yeah. It was obvious that Ted Stevens' role he was the one picked out by the leadership to cow the (House impeachment) managers. After the initial attack on Lott by the managers remember when Lott came over and told us, "Listen, you're not gonna dump this garbage on us" the managers all attacked him. Not physically, of course, but they just jumped all over him. I think from then on Lott kind of avoided confrontations. But he sent Ted Stevens in, who was a kind of irascible guy. And his job was to just hammer us down. But to be very honest with you, it didn't work.
