I am curious to know which Olympic team Mr. Berger was on?

I believe he competed on the Israeli team. It’s a common practice. If you pay any attention to the Olympics you will find that often recent immigrants—or even second generations—who are top level athletes will try out for teams from their countries of origin when they don’t have a chance to make the US team. Happens all the time.

Plus, in some sports, half the athletes of other teams train here in the US anyway.
