I should hope that Puerto Rico would not be admitted into the U.S. until they have demonstrated that they can be a contributor to the union and not a dependent. I would like to see PR admitted, but only under the proper conditions.Well, that's just it. By treating the territory like a dependant it has become one. Not too many mainland Americans moving to Porto Rico (I love spelling it that way). Are there still more Porto Ricans in NYC than in Porto Rico?
Our other territories were always domains to be populated and dominated and absorbed into the Union. Porto Rico has been treated like an adopted child: be careful not to upset her, spoil the hell out of her, and write her out of the will.
Politically, the last thing we need is two more Democratic Senators. Nevertheless, it'd be good to see a modern demonstration of the power of federalism. The standing model hasn't worked.
