Hispanic Dropout Rate Four Times That Of Whites
Report Blames Government For Lack Of Funding
POSTED: 11:15 a.m. EDT June 20, 2002
WASHINGTON -- A new report says the Hispanic school-age population is booming, but spending on programs for those students has lagged and they are four times as likely as non-Hispanic, white students to drop out.
The report faults the Bush administration for failing to provide more funding to teacher training, bilingual education programs and immigrant education.
White House spokesman Taylor Gross defended the administration's record, saying it has provided significant overall increases in its last two education budgets.
Gross says the Bush budget has a $1 billion increase in grants for disadvantaged schools.
The report by the Senate Education Committee and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus was prepared to set the stage for a discussion Thursday at a conference of Hispanic leaders organized by Democrats.

Its always "GIMME THE MONEY" with the Rats. If some people don't fare well in school, its not due to bad teaching or student laziness, its the taxpayers' fault. Somehow I knew they'd get around again to blaming society for the sky high Hispanic droupout rate.

They dropped out because Bush didn't spend enough money? Maybe, just maybe, not everyone is inclined to get an education.

And if they don't want to be educated, why should the government be blamed for it? Last I heard this was still a free country.

The report faults the Bush administration for failing to provide more funding to teacher training, bilingual education programs and immigrant education. Even though bilingual education has failed everywhere it has been tried these idiots keep pushing it because it means more jobs and higher salaries for teachers.
The parents of Hispanic children dont want it because they know it does far more harm to their children than good.
But Dimocrats can never let a bad program die as log as there is a vocal (and rich and no mater how small) advocacy out there push for it.

Much of the drop out is due to migrant families moving from place to place in search of work. Many who work on farms or in orchards know that they will be there only for a certain part of the season, not a whole year. Just inconvenient facts conveniently ignored by the liberals.

1. Make English the national language - none of this bilingual BS. If you can't speak the language of the nation, get the hell out.
2. Someone should remind the Senate that it isn't the job of the American taxpayer to fund the education of Mexican nationals.
3. IF THEY'RE HERE ILLEGALLY, SHIP THEM THE HELL BACK TO MEXICO! Along with their parents.

Well said. I too 'drifted' from the education system. Went to the library a lot and taught myself (school moved at too slow a pace). Now I make $30+/hr and many people I know that did graduate are lucky to make half that.
Why? Is it because I am better or more able to learn? No, i came from a lower middle class family but learned one important lesson - you are responsible for your education and where you go in this world. Not Uncle Sam or anyone else. So I am not rich (yet!), but through hard work and realizing that no one will hand me what I want in life I have moved up in the world and now get the things I want.
People nowadays seem to think they are owed a nice car, a single family dwelling, etc and so on - news flash to those folks: Just because you want it does not mean you get it. You want it, YOU earn it.
Thanks for the reply, very well worded!

they are four times as likely as non-Hispanic, white students to drop outI'm confused. This statement implies that Hispanics are white and that Hispanicity is only a "country of origin" thing, not a racial thing. But Hispanics are almost always grouped in with "people of color" (regardless of what color they actually are) granting them the same victimhood status as blacks. So which is it? Perhaps, are they "white" when it suits them (so they can feel racially superior to blacks) and "of color" when it suits them (so they can get the same government benefits as blacks)? One thing is for certain-the evil white man is still the villain.

Same here, sort of. Drifted out of education to be a rock star (wanted to be in Metallica since '83), did drugs, grew up, got wise and started working hard at low/no-skill jobs. Will be attending a technical college soon to learn surveying/drafting and plan on doubling my income in 2 years, and will increase by more as I gain more skills. Took up binge-reading just about everything I could get my hands on and that has proven to be a much better education than standing around whining about how my government doesnt care enough...JFK

Hispanic is a bit of an artificial label. I am White of Spanish, French, and German origin. Most people think I look Italian. But I was born in Mexico and Spanish is my first language so I am Hispanic.
Sometime's I've gotten comments from the "brown and proud" crowd that I can't be Hispanic because I look too "white". When I tell them to go stick it in my very good Spanish - they drop the issue.
Most Hispanic Americans happen to be Mestizos (part Indian) or Mulatos (part black). Some are even Asian or full blooded Indian...but they all get lumped into this category.
"Non-Hipanic white" is sort of a way of acknowledging that while Hispanics are mosly 'non-white", there are exceptions.

Aside from putting a man on the moon when has 'throwing money at the problem' EVER solved anything ?
