Batajnica exhumation begins
18:19
BELGRADE, Thursday – Exhumation and autopsy of a large number of unidentified bodies found in the outer Belgrade area of Batajnica began on June 1, the Belgrade District Court announced today.

The court’s investigating judge, Milan Dilparic, told B92 that two mass graves had so far been discovered at the site, which lies within the police anti-terrorist unit’s training compound.

The first graves were excavated on the same site in June last year.

To November last year, 305 bodies had been found in two excavations in Batajnica. They included the bodies of women, children and the elderly.

A number of documents found with the bodies indicate that they are of Kosovo Albanians, but DNA analysis is expected to yield full identification.

Three of the bodies were identified as the Bitic brothers who had earlier been held in the Prokuplje prison.

Another 48 bodies have been exhumed near the village of Perucac, and it is believed that an unknown number of bodies are buried under the motorway near the southern Serbian city of Vranje.

Police have so far been silent on who gave the order for the bodies to be moved to Serbia for mass interment.

However it is alleged that at a meeting of senior state officials in March, 1999, the then Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic ordered police minister Vlajko Stojiljkovic to “clean up the field” and eliminate any evidence of crimes committed in Kosovo.

Stojiljkovic died earlier this year after shooting himself on the steps of the Federal Parliament after the passage of legislation allowing the extradition of Yugoslav citizens to the Hague Tribunal.

He had been charged on the same indictment as Milosevic with war crimes in Kosovo.

Sorry, I made a silly assumption not at all merited by your post. I agree, my post doesn't make sense.

(tip-toeing away quietly now...)

Well, since we're all sitting around singing "Kum-ba-ya" at the love-in, let me add several kind words for old Trop. His extended discussions w/such worthies as kosta50, Firewall, getoffmylawn and others gave me insights into the old Yugoslavia that you can't get from books. They also made me realize how damned stupid the fight between Serbs and Croats was, and gave me more sympathy for the Croat position than I previously had. Those discussions were far preferable to the name calling that usually passes for debate on FR (and not just on the Balkan threads).

That said, I consider that Trop dishes nonsense when it suits him. E.g., the "Serbs cleansed themselves" schtick--yeah, like sticking around was an option if they wanted to stay alive--as well as his argument that the Chetniks stopped fighting the axis occupiers in 1941, which I hope to address at some point when I have the time. I'm sure Trop will disagree with his customary vigor, and that's what makes a horserace.

I'm traveling again next week, but hope to see y'all again sometime soon.

'A'Brit' is clearly a KLA supporter who is Albanian......Wrong again.

(let's hear you even describe Serbians as normal people or the Albanian mafia as tribal thugs),......any Serbs who did not paticipate in, condone, or turn a blind eye to mass murder, ethnic cleansing, rape, torture etc., I will gladly consider their credentials to being normal members of the human race. As to the rest, they will hopefully get what they deserve.

That's big of you!!! The problem is that you accuse the entire population of being guilty in some way. Your stance isn't normal, and you just reveal your hate even more. Good thing that populations in the Nato countries aren't judged that way.

"Well, since we're all sitting around singing "Kum-ba-ya" at the love-in..."

LOL... Just remember that some of the loudest of the 'happy clappy' bunch recently have been Bernard 'let's throw flowers of lerve' Kouchner and Jamie 'Nukem' Rubin, who was raised in proper Happy Clappy Commune style. Just goes to show...

I also disagree with Tropoljac about such things as Jasenovac and I'm sure that he disagrees with me about certain things as well. But we do agree on the basics of war, destruction and the pond life of careerist politicians and media amoeba who cause so much misery and don't give a damn.

As for the trading insults, I agree that there's too much of it, but sometimes just a smidgen can be fun. Besides which, sometimes you have to defend yourself.
