The New Madrid fault....It runs from New Madrid, MO southwest to Marked Tree, AR.
I'm working on power plant construction site just southwest of Blytheville, AR and we are sitting right dead on top of this fault (plant has seismic restraints designed into it). We did not feel a thing but there is so much heavy construction equipment shaking the ground at work here right now that we probably wouldn't have felt it anyway.....still, it is kinda scarey, especially if we got another one like the one in the early 1800s...the devestation would be HUGE.

As I mentioned earlier, the book "The Rift" (among others) is about a hypothetical massive earthquake on this fault. It wreaks all sorts of havoc with the Mississippi River, causing flooding, dams breaching, a nuclear fuel containment building damaged, etc. I haven't finished the book (actually haven't read it since early last year -- I got distracted with events in my life), but it was pretty good so far.
