I am all for pornography. All of you deserve SOME sex life.

Ooh, ooh, another gradeschool taunt. How... insipid.

Now if you'll excuse me, my wife of fourteen years requires something of me.

I came up in the early and mid 70's, when porn was rampant and its values spreading like wildfire. The times were so libertine that we fourteen year olds could routinely stand at the newsstands for hours and look and buy. It was very easy to get, just like alcohol was at the time.

Men that want to look at the stuff should be allowed to. It is their right to do so in a free country. But that doesn't make it wholesome, moral, or desirable. A married man who spends his time looking at computer porn, which is the "in" type these days, is depriving his wife of romantic attention and wrecking her self esteem. At some point, their relationship will ultimately suffer. Women hate being compared to airbrushed pictures.

The women in porn are tragic victims. They are someone's daughters. Many are addicted to drugs and have been sexually abused. The best solution to porn is to employ the same tactic that has ravaged the abortion industry, where finding doctors, nurses, and customers gets more and more difficult. Simply teach and LIVE the right way. Stress the family and how love between a husband and wife is a beautiful thing. Just as motherhood and childraising is regarded by young women far differently today than in the early 70's, young men can be shown that pornography is an alluring but very poor substitute for female companionship.

Even on the liberal talkshows like "The View", the female hosts and guests fawn and gush over each other's children. Though abortion remains legal, it is a nuisance that its vociferous supporters defend in principle only, a relic of the "sexual revolution," and radical feminism. In reality, almost no one wants their female children to grow up and have abortions or go to work in the porn industry. And like someone here said, we don't exactly want our sons sitting with Kleenex in hand at their computer screens either. Teach them how precious a woman is inside, and what makes them so delightful as people and partners. My mother went absolutely insane anytime I was curious around the neighborhood little girls, and her repression and punishments ultimately created a curiosity that made me embrace porn as a teenager.

The porn beast is dying a slow death, just like abortion. It is also the price we pay for an open society. Some people visit dirty websites and bookstores, but I get to read my Bible. Not a bad tradeoff.

How come I'm the first person you pinged for a porno article? Am I Free Republic's Hugh Hefner or something? If the answer's yes, I'm quite honored, thank you.

Of course - life is full of choices like that. We have only a limited amount of time, and so we must prioritize our desires in order to make efficient use of that time. Perhaps you can inspire someone else to take up the slack if you find that you lack the time.

A good suggestion I try to put in practice. I already have friends on the Board of Education and Town Council!

A bit of a complicated explanation for deploring the consumption of people by people.

Please be specific. Which part is melodramatic? The entire article?

Yes, actually. Look at the sub-heads . . . all subjective, yet the author tries to prove each point objectively by quoting people/authors/experts who agree. This piece claims to appeal to reason but trumpets nothing but emotion. Plus, if we're to believe the tone of the piece, porno seems to be the greatest threat to civilization as we know it. That's overstating things a bit.

The problem is that everyone feels that way, and most people can't agree on toppings for a pizza, let alone how society should be organized. Thus, we are forced to spend a great deal of time persuading others of things that seem self-evident to us. But, if you can find a way around that, and you make me an absolute dictator, with unlimited powers and the means to enforce my desires, I promise to ruthlessly and swiftly implement my preferred vision for society.

But it's quite a bit more than that. So many problems occur when politicians implement policies that the majority is dead set against (usually because of backroom deals, money transfers, etc.)

No? That's okay - I'm not quite ready to cede that power to you either ;)

No, but it gets tiresome fighting politicians who are clearly thwarting the will of the majority. I can assure you, the majority of townspeople in the next town do not want men masturbating in the town library.

I'm not worried about it because VA isn't well known for its radical cultural shifts. We're very much like the Swiss in that regard.

You should worry, my friend.

Exactly. While, I probably don't have a serious a priori objection to porn the way you might, I would certainly agree with you 100% that the seeming indifference of your local authorities to this library thing is wholly improper. Such laws exist for a reason, and unless it turns out that you're the only one in town who has a problem with public masturbation at the library (which seems doubtful), they really ought to be a bit more responsive to the citizenry.

I would never deny you the right to determine and implement the sort of community you want to live in - within some basic limits, of course. And if you happen to be in my town, I'm with you all the way on this library masturbation thing ;)

It is both women themselves and society that are devaluing women. When women decide they want to have sex whenever and wherever (which of course is their right), they encourage men (who don't generally need much encrouagement) to see them predominantly as receptacles for sexual release. In TV's Sex in the City, the women protagonists decry the lack of men willing to commit. But the problem is themselves. Most men I know aren't willing to commit to women who have screwed every man who's ever dated them. Society's flooding every home with computer porn and every town with adult XXX stores ends up accomplishing the same thing. Men are encouraged to see women as the least of what they are. The average college girl today has slept around quite a bit (judging by the epidemic of chlamydia, herpes, and other infections). Many young men I know classify girls into two groups. Those who are easy (now the majority), and those whom they might consider as life long mates. At the bottom, many women are lowering themselves to the same level as the women in those porno magazines. And they think they are being liberated!

Ah, but are your neighbors all out there making their feelings known? The elected officials of your town can only steal your right to determine what sort of town you will live in if good men sit back and do nothing.

Not to say that you are doing nothing, but what are your neighbors doing? Are they content to let you take care of it, or are they actively working for change - remember that bit about people getting the sort of government they deserve? Does that make more sense to you now? ;)

In any case, they can never really thwart the will of the majority - if, that is, the majority will drop the TV remote and get up off of its butt. The question you have to ask is, can you win this on your own, or will you need the rest of your neighbors walking beside you? And if you do, are you willing to wait around until they see the same problem that you do, and are motivated to do more about it than complain around the dinner table?

And if you can't effect change on your own, either because the majority is too complacent to assist you, or because they're actively thwarting you, then you always have the ultimate protest - vote with your feet, since this town will clearly not be a good fit for you any longer.

Funny how you porn champions have to slam people of faith. Notice no one has preached on this thread. It was strictly the effects as described in the article.

Come on, you're embarrassing yourself. The article wasn't some scientific report on the outcome of an experiment, it was a sermon!

The vast majority of people in my town just want someone to pave the roads, take care of the garbage collection, create nice parks, etc. We are constantly assaulted (overwhelmingly on the liberal side) with stuff that no one wants (bilingual education when the parents don't want it, homosexual Boy Scout scoutmasters, porn and masturbation in the town library, all sorts of educational theory claptrap in our schools (which will take years to fail, while our kids are at school), schools' telling our kids that condoms protect well against VD (they don't), etc. etc. What's depressing is the need to constantly fight to keep the government from doing ever new stuff that harms our kids and our families. But on the bright side, the country is turning more conservative, as people are getting tired everywhere of the same.

"Like alcholics and drug users, those addicted to porn rarely realize the harm it's causing them until such harm becomes substantial."

I am definitely not "addicted to porn" (for the most part, it tends to be kinda repulsive)--or to alchohol, drugs, or anything else--never have been--not coffee, tobacco, gambling, anything. Never been a smoker. I have the opposite of an addictive personality. It's a matter of luck, not virtue.

On the other hand, I am an adult, and if I choose to watch skin-flicks--or drink coffee or alcohol, or smoke cigarettes, or whatever--it's nobody's business but my own. And as to whether or not it is harmful to me--I'm the best judge of that.

Some don't agree. They think that Big Brother or somebody should do an intervention in my behalf--to save me from my inadequacies.

Somehow--I know it's a miracle--I've managed to get through life very successfully making such judgments for myself--and taking full and complete responsibility for the decisions I make. I think I'll continue to rely on that strategy. It seems to be working.

"This all reminds me of the time some preacher claimed that Ted Bundy committed mass murder because of pornography. "

I know. As though watching skin-flicks would convert a healthy man into a sadistic, psychopathic, necrophiliac, serial murderer.

Sure, I can certainly understand that feeling. But then again, a wise fellow once said that the price of liberty was eternal vigilance. ;)
