(Hempstead, Long Island-AP) -- The overpopulation of Canada geese on Long Island has caught the attention of U-S Senator Charles Schumer, who wants the federal government to do something.
Schumer is calling on the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a pilot program to solve the geese population on Long Island. The Canada geese have become year-round residents of parks and lake areas, causing problem with droppings on ballfields and play areas.
Schumer has written to Fish and Wildlife director Steve Williams to explore humane methods to control the geese population using non-lethal methods. Schumer said Nassau and Suffolk County executives will pick communities for the pilot program.
Some of the ideas to curb the geese population include:
- planting tall grasses that impair the visibility of the geese and make them feel vulnerable to predators;
- discourage people from feeding the birds;
- physical barriers such as fences around lakes and ponds to block access to the water;
- addling eggs so babies don't hatch;
- spray the grasses with repellents that make the grass taste bad;
- using plastic owls, moving scarecrows, noise machines and other sound effects to scare the geese;
- using specially trained dogs to chase the geese from the parks;

The Canada geese have become year-round residents of parks and lake areas,
Well, if they are now year-round residents, they are no longer Canadian Geese, but New York Geese and thus they are Constituent Geese, eh?

Exactly what I say. We have loads of geese here in a preservation in Westchester, New York that are not Canadian. They breed like rabbits and start feeding on people's lawns. Every once in a while they start killing them to keep down the population. Its a simple solution not one that should involve the government.
To: Russ
An open season with shotguns would do the job nicely. I second that!!! You could always feed some poor people in New York City with the geese (providing the b-b's pellets are removed...)

The irony here is that this legislation will probably get voted on in the Senate. While any real initiatives never make it to the floor.

Agreed, Schumer is an idiot, and this is hardly a govt responsibility.
OTOH, these geese can make a terrible mess.Agreed that Schumer is an idiot.
OTOH, hunting is not always an alternative in densely populated suburbs.
It is my understanding that a pair of nesting swan will chase away the geese.
You'll still have some big bird poop to contend with, but not as much.

Note to Senator Schumer: Shoot them and eat them! Problem solved!
Like most socialists, Chuckie takes the wrong vector to get to his destination. He figures that the world is round (one of the few ideas that the socialists buy into) and he figures, "I'll get there some time"! The man is an incredible idiot.

It's obvious now that Canadian Geese are racist against Americans. That's why they're pooping on everything in Long Island.
What's good enough for the dog is good enough for the gander.

I get the feeling that "Ol Chuckey" got bombed by a high flyer. Something I'd pay real money to see at a web site.

Every socialist idea has a consequence, every conservative idea has a solution.
Now, think about that!

Enough! All Canadian Geese are equally ballanced between their right and left wings, similar to your basic canucklehead. However, sometimes they fly too long on one wing(the left one at present)and when this one falters(as is happening)they then switch to the other wing. A suggestion, here in Alberta, we have a surplus of wolves that love to snack on geese, given the appropriate green cardage, Bob's your uncle.

Maybe we can get into a support group with the Geesian-Americans and we can convince them to do more abortions, if that helps to self-actualize them in a meaningful and loving way.

I take back my last reply, I completely missed the part about controling them humanly!

It would seem that the geese are as full of s__t as Senator Chuckie. That's not possible, even collectively.
