WHY are these family members going on TV? WHAT could they possible think that they are accomplishing?

And if they weren't appearing on television, people would say "What are they hiding???" I heard many comments (I don't think from you though) yesterday as to where the family was, and why weren't they talking to the media? The family took a day off yesterday from the media. Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I said on another thread that the "family spokesperson" seems to have become standard operating procedure since the Chandra Levy case. I can see why it is necessary to capture and maintain the public's attention in a constant effort to get anyone with information to come forward. I just could not see why these people -- so many different people -- would go on TV when they have nothing much to say and were giving out contradictory information and generally looking like they had something to hide. My confusion was not that they were doing it but that they were so bad at it (most of them) and it seemed to be counterproductive.

But now Yeti has given me a new angle to consider. If the family and the police have known who the perp was from the get-go (which to me means "extended family member"), then this parade of family members is designed not to get and keep the public's attention so that leads will come in, but to speak directly to the perp and try to keep him from doing anything rash.

I just hope that the perp watches cable TV. And doesn't Freep.
