Maybe, but if this young girl was actually abducted by a mentally ill person, the family is in the position of needing to appease that person and perhaps convince them they understand his motives and are not being judgmental. I think that analyzing the behavior of people in horrific situations which we cannot possibly understand is fruitless and to some degree cruel. I can tell you this is my worst nightmare and I have no idea how I would be acting if it actually happened. My daughter's survuival would be my only motive.

Maybe this girl wasn't 'abducted' at all. Maybe she ran off with someone, like a cousin, like this uncles son, perhaps. Maybe this uncle knows it & is just trying to get them to come back. But I completely agree with you about not knowing how we would behave in this terrible situation. We don't know till we have been there.

What I would like to see is someone like Glen Ford (Original "Ransom") or Mel Gibson (Remake) stand up and say If you don't bring my daughter back or if you hurt her, I will spend the rest of my life hunting you down like a dog. By the time I'm through with you death will be a relief.

Sounds like "Uncle Tom" is the one with issues.

My guess is the Girl is pregnant, and by a family member. {poligamy} She therefor had to be put away until she gives birth. Lets face it these people are MORMONS.

Think you might be on to something. The uncle's seemingly bizaare comments might have been calculated to help the girl. The notion being that if the perepetrator can be humored into thinking that the family is understanding of his motives (a "benevolent" attraction to Elizabeth) he might be more likely to spare her. I don't agree with this mistaken line of thinking, but it might explain why he said it. It is understandable that the family might grasp at straws to save her. Unfortunately, the kidnapper's motives are unlikely to be based on anything resembling a wholesome attaction to Elizabeth.
