I didn't hear the comment about Elizabeth not liking boys, but I did hear the father go on and on about how his daughter was such an angel. It had a strong "the lady dost protest too much, methinks" quality to it.
I did not think anything untoward about it at the time, just noted it. I thought "if a father wants to think such lofy thoughts about his own daughter, what harm can there be in that?" Now I am looking back on those and similar comments by other family members and think that they held more clues than I was able to detect at the time. Now it seems that he waas being defensive and that what he really wanted to say was "There is no way that Elizabeth would do what it will eventually be come to be thought that she did."

It had a strong "the lady dost protest too much, methinks" quality to it. I don't think there's anything wrong in this per se. If someone had asked my dad about me he would've said I was an angel. Elizabeth is probably gone for good. Even if she's found alive after what she's been through she will not be the same girl. Something about THIS story & family doesn't feel right but it's pefectly normal for most parents to think only the best of their children especially if all they have is a memory.
BTW, I'm Catholic so I know about mindless bashing. 80% of the Mormon religion is too outlandish for me but I've got to say that the Mormons I've met have been nice people with enviable happy family lives.
