Utah Man Sought in Missing Girl Case
By RICH VOSEPKA
Associated Press Writer SALT LAKE CITY (AP) More than a week after 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart disappeared, police said Wednesday that they want to talk to a man they think may have information about the girl.
They are searching for Bret Michael Edmunds, 26. He is probably living in a 1997 green Saturn with Utah license plate number 266XJH, police said.
Elizabeth was reported taken at gunpoint from her million-dollar home last Wednesday between 1 a.m. to 2 a.m They were not calling Edmunds a suspect, but said they do want to talk to him. They had identified him through a partial license plate number provided by a milkman who had seen a vehicle in the area arround the time of the girl's disappearance.
Authorities said Edmunds is also wanted on two warrants for fraud and assault on a police officer, Sgt. Fred Louis said. Police said he may have been in the area.
Tuesday, Police Chief Rick Dinse said the investigation was looking at those who had access to the neighborhood or the house, although not necessarily a family member. He said they have received some promising leads in the case.
Officials from the Utah Department of Corrections have given police a list of dozens of names of known sex offenders on probation or parole, but nearly all of them have been cleared, said Jack Ford, an agency spokesman.

Elizabeth was reported taken at gunpoint from her million-dollar home...Uh, does anyone own a million-dollar home with no security system whatsoever?

ummmm.... Yeah.

I heard they had a security system, but it was turned off because "it disturbed the children." I can't imagine how.

It is very hard for me to believe that someone would enter an occupied house at night through a window, find his way to the correct bedroom without causing any alarm (what if Mom was up getting a snack?) take the older sister at gunpoint, BUT leave the 9-year old unharmed and unrestrained to raise the alarm as soon as he was out the door. How could he KNOW that she wouldn't run straight to her parents??????
This makes no sense at all- he would have known that he was facing life in prison (or the death penalty in Utah) for this kidnapping- yet he left a witness.
I can't buy it.

Sounds like they are getting closer.

buy it.
I'm with you. This story seems awfully strange. First thing that went through my mind was: parents just took out some life insurance on the girl, and now want to cash in... I hope I'm wrong, but the dad gives me the creeps.

Is there a photo or other description?None that I've seen, but as the story is fleshed out over the next few hours all that will become known, I'm sure.

How could he KNOW that she wouldn't run straight to her parents?????? I think there's probably a lot of inconsistent reporting going on. Early on, I read one (only one) article that said the younger girl was pretending to be asleep when he came in. He probably then assumed that he was safe.
And I'm thinking that a 9 year old child would probably fall back into sleep, maybe even thinking she was dreaming, at that late hour. And then wake up hours later thinking did that happen? I'm buying it.

Sounds like something is in the works. I hope to God the little girl is still alive. May God bless the family.

Yup, my mom.
She does have a nice shotgun, and I wish she'd get a dog to go with it.

I've been searcing for the poster they held up on tv, but it's not around yet. He's 6'2, 235 pounds, born 1975, looked troubled in the photo, dark hair and eyes it seemed in photo, caucasian seems to be. He's a transient, living in his car.

Shotguns are useful if you're awake and ready.

That's bothered me as well. It's an enormous risk to take considering the stakes.
