One thing that bothers me here. How could the perp be sure that there would be no screams from either of the girls? If someone goes into a home in the middle of the night, that must be the big thing on their mind. This is a curious aspect of this case.

Say there HAD been screaming. Almost certainly he could have fled downstairs and out the door before anyone could have stopped him.

And IMO the girls of this age will scream over any imagined or real excitement or stimulation, but if frightened would clam up and crawl silent into a hole and die. [n q lit, but almost]

Second thought. I don't know there wasn't screaming and whether the the layout of the house would make it difficult for parents to hear. I understand it is a large house.

Good point which I haven't seen raised before. My guess is that he was as surprised as anyone else to find that the girls shared a room. In a house that size, and with 7 bedrooms, 2 parents, and 6 kids, he may well have assumed that each child had his/her own bedroom, and that once he found the right bedroom (or he might have had some way of knowing in advance which room was Elizabeth's, without knowing that it was also Mary Katherine's) he would find Elizabeth asleep and be able to gag her before she really woke up and made any noise.
