Good morning! I'm with you, I admire these people that go on the subs. I could NEVER do it. I get that panick feeling just thinking about it. Even watching submarine movies I get that claustrophobic feeling. *smile* Have a great day, friend!!!!!

A Century of the Silent Service: Heroes of the Submarine Force

For one hundred years U.S. Navy submariners have risked their lives for their country in one of the most demanding and dangerous elements of the naval service. Living and working in confined spaces beneath the ocean's surface, their courage and dedication have produced incredible results.

In World War II, the U.S. Navy's submarine force scored the most complete victory of any force in any theater of the war by destroying 1,314 ships-55% of all Japanese shipping sunk. The U.S. lost 3,506 men in 52 submarines, now on eternal patrol.

Navy submariners took on a new task in the Cold War. With the advent of nuclear power they were able to remain on patrol for months at a time and thereby provide a stealthy, powerful naval deterrent.

Since 1900, it is the Sailors who have manned the boats who have made these successes possible. From the commanding officer to the engineers, sonarmen, and torpedomen, all have truly been American heroes.

Thank you so much for your post. I retired from the Navy 2 weeks ago and already miss it. Three Submarine tours, USS Pittsburgh (SSN-720), USS Alexandria (SSN-757) and USS San Juan (SSN-751), also did a tour on the USS Fulton (AS-11) and at the USS Nautilus Submarine Museum in Groton, CT. Loved submarines so much, I created a CD-ROM about submarines and sell it through my web site at Test Depth Media and at several museums. Take Care and God Bless.
Doug

Please pray for the people in Colorado. There are about 4 major fires going on right now. There is a fire near Trinidad, one near Durango, one in Glenwood Springs (10,000 acres), and the largest is near Denver (76,000 acres). Please pray for safety for the fire fighters and the people living in these areas. Also, pray for rain! Thank you!

Not sure if you know this, but the USS Wahoo was one of the best known American submarines during WWII. Was commanded by the legendary Dudley "Mush" Morton, XO was also the legendary Dick O'Kane, later the CO of the USS Tang (SS-306). Both are pictured in your photo.

Submarines have changed over the last 100 years, but the courage and dedication of the people who man them has not.

A big Canteen Salute to all the Submariners out there.

Good morning. This is a photo of Beach_Babe's son-in-law, Sam. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after 9/11, and has completed basic training, but hasn't been assigned to a ship yet. Sam is a former commercial fisherman who loves the sea. Thank you for your dedication to our country, Sam, and God Bless and keep you safe.

Welcome Aboard, Sub-Driver!
After flying fighters, yours was the job I really wanted to have when I grew up.

GREAT Thread.

Wish my father-in-law had computer access so he could see this.

I've mentioned before that he served aboard the USS Tinosa (SS-283).

One of his sea stories he shared with us in April - While on patrol he was the first to spot an enemy ship while standing watch. For his efforts, the Skipper gave him a bottle of whiskey. Being a non-drinker, he stowed it away in his seachest. Somewhere along the line, someone stole the whiskey.
