Sorry it took so long to ping that. I've been out of pocket (away from FR a lot lately),
having computer problems (can ya dig it, Snow Bunny, lol!) and tryin' to play catch up
every day. It's a losing battle today! LOL!

Thank you for that post about your great uncle. I wish I could personally thank him for his service, but I will extend that thanks to you instead. The bravery of the men who did so much for us during WWII is overwhelming in hindsight, and I am just stunned by what it must have taken to do what they did. Those men had character, dedication, determination....it must have been frightening beyond our wildest imagination to face what they faced. My hat (oops...I don't have a hat) My heart goes out to you and your uncle. :)

Dorado (SS-248) was launched 23 May 1943 by Electric Boat Co., Groton, Conn.; sponsored by Mrs. E. G. Allen; and commissioned 28 August 1943, Lieutenant Commander E. C. Schneider in command.

Dorado sailed from New London 6 October 1943, for the Canal Zone but never arrived. Air searches were begun immediately after her scheduled date of arrival 14 October. Widely scattered oil slicks with occasional debris were found and later investigation revealed that a patrol plane from Guantanamo Bay delivered a surprise attack on an unidentified submarine on 12 October and was later fired upon by another unidentified submarine. A German submarine was known to be operating near the scene of these two contacts, but the actual fate of Dorado remains unknown.
