The Interior Department has such a deal for you.
It's trying to get rid of 301 of them, all considered government surplus.
This is dumb, at a time our country is being infiltrated by TERRORIST we want to terminate Government Control of our "Lighthouses"not only that, the Interior Department want to give them to non profit organizations first and we know such Groups like-
PETA, GREENPEACE AND OTHER ANTI-US CONSITUTION ACTIVIST, COULD HAVE CONTROL OF OUR VITAL OUTLETS!
Instead of securing our BOARDERS AND SHORES we continue to let our guard down. MICHIGAN has one of the highest Islam populations
RUSH was talking today of all the political shell groups in the Democratic party to funnel money, if this program should be a fact we as citizens will never know for sure who is operating these outlets!
WHAT NEXT?

Calm down. These lighthouses have nothing to do with border security. Moreover, the article implies that the nonprofits which will be allowed to take over the lighthouses will be more like historical societies and such, not PETA and the organizations you cite. The article, despite the headline, suggests that this will not be a free-for-all, but rather a strictly supervised transfer, with only conditional property rights. Reacting hysterically to such a meaningless event isn't helpful.

With the advent of GPS and cheap radar units for backup, I'm not sure how useful lighthouses are anymore.
I certainly wouldn't call them strategic.

Personally, I think this would make a
killer weekend retreat for me & my family... especially now that they've moved it farther inland! =)

Don't they just unscrew out like a regular light bulb?

Make a great survival retreat...just buy a lighthouse (or get one free) and then a missle silo..put the lighthouse in the silo...(it's a Fruedian kinda thang) and you are in business... Now if I could only get a water proof cover for one....

If our country needs lighthouses for border control or navigation, we are already lost.
These are nice historical landmarks, be given over to nice organizations that will be responsible for their upkeep.
Never complain about getting anything out of the government's hands.

Have you ever done tour of the Outer Banks? Personally, it has been a while for me, so it might be a bit more crowded than I remember, but if you are looking for a long weekend, and don't mind a bit of driving, I'd highly recommend
The Outer Banks, including Jockey's Rigde, Nags Head, Hattaras, and Ocracoke.

Rondout Lighthouse (Kingston)- The Hudson River Maritime Museum was awarded NYS funds in 1995 for masonry restoration work at Rondout Lighthouse. In late 2000, the matching funds were finally raised and the State has permitted the original funds to be still used. During the summer of 2001, the Museum developed specifications and bid out the work. The Empire State Construction Co. of Staten Island is expected to begin work during the fall, if matching bricks can be found and if the full state Budget has been passed. The harsh weather on the Hudson River has caused much of the brickwork to crack. The Museum runs scheduled fall tours to the lighthouse on the weekends until October 8. All trips are at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30. In addition they run non-scheduled tours for school and other groups. For those who like haunted lighthouses visit the light during October (selected dates) for their "Haunted Lighthouse and Stories on the Hudson" program. For more information about the lighthouse, tour fees, and the museum call 845-338-0071. Esopus Lighthouse - Help us save this last wooden Lighthouse on the Hudson. The lighthouse is level, the cat is in the window and we have made great strides at restoration, but we need your help. Contact Sharon Jones - Director - for information on membership, donations, sponsoring or volunteering to work at the historic lighthouse. Yes, I have, and have done so several times.
My parents rent a house every summer in Nags Head - every year from when I was born up until just last summer.
I can remember when Duck was a little flyspeck of a town - not home to multimillion dollar vacation homes like it is today.
My favorite section is between Oregon Inlet & Rodanthe - so peaceful & isolated.
I used to do a lot of surf fishing in my single days... what a great time we had then!

This may seem enchanting to some and obsolete to others, but we are dealing with a Cyber Caveman who is adept in more ways than many even imagine

this would make a killer weekend retreat If I only had the means.....
That would be even better than the old firehouse that was for sale a few years ago in Jersey City. It was for sale for less than a week before it got scapped up. That great big garage in the middle of the city plus the cool pole that they left in made it a hot item.
