Do you have any knowledge on the area that would be affected by one of these, given normal wind conditions?

DC and points east, most likely in a narrower/shorter path than a "live" nuke. As for the duration, that is a function of the isotope(s) in the bomb.

The scary thing is that unless every last explosion is monitored for radiation, the first sign may be a bunch of people suffering frank and advanced symptoms of radiation sickness.

If I remember correctly, maybe five miles. And it can be cleaned up at great expense. Its not like that area is going to be radioactive for 100 years.
