The FBI's new surveillance and monitoring powers will accomplish nothing except to establish an infrastructure easily manipulated to target American citizens. The 9/11 terrorists were so careless in explicitly and publicly professing their intentions, that it's baffling the FBI didn't pick up on it. And now the FBI wishes to monitor every institution in society - for what? As long as the borders are open and the immigration system dysfunctional, the risk of terrorism will be as high as it ever was.

Aside from a few highly publicized incdents, there were not widespread abuses. Indeed, most of the so-called abuses were in the pursuit of communists.
If you are too young, or too naiive, communism was a threat. It sought to infiltrate and spy.
In that case, the end justified the means. We won the Cold War. A few entertainers got tailed. So what. No harm, no foul.
Just being an American citizen, does not exempt one from "targeting." If an American citizen is the enemy, he deserves targeting.
