On Friday, as Michael Skakel stood to hear the Norwalk Superior Court jury foreman read his guilty verdict, about 20 friends and family members stood behind him.

When judicial marshals stepped forward to handcuff him, David Skakel reached in support to lay a hand on his brother's shoulder, only to have it thrown off by a uniformed marshal.

What is so repressive about teaching someone to respect their body and not to use someone else...How repressive to teach about right and wrong?! I had purchased Fuhrman's book, Murder in Greenwich, earlier but then couldn't really bring myself to read it because I was so sure M. Skakel would get off, and I didn't want to be depressed. Following the guilty verdict, I dug the book out and am now about halfway through it.

READ IT. It's out in paper.

The Skakels were truly a mess for two generations. Just two examples: they actually shot at people from the windows of their home, and they were known to kill small animals with golf clubs; they were also local bullies. Many families in Greenwich didn't allow their kids to mix with the Skakel boys. Martha Moxley's mom didn't know much about them or she probably would have warned Martha not to associate with them, either. The family had moved to Greenwich only a year before their daughter was murdered.

Furthermore, most of the Greenwich police department actually worked for them part-time as chauffeurs and errand runners to supplement their incomes. Rushton Skakel, Sr. was a police buff, and the police frequented the house for coffee (and presumably, doughnuts). The police had gotten the boys out of trouble on many occasions before the Moxley murder.

I am surprised that Fuhrman was even able to compile a book after all the dead ends he ran into and the complete lack of cooperation and obstruction from the Greenwich police department.

READ THE BOOK. It's really good, and a real eye-opener.

Though it's hard to be astonished at what the rich and influential get away with, it's still a surprise that the police in Greenwich were willing to actually ruin the life of the innocent Skakel "tutor-babysitter" Ken Littleton by harrassing him continually in an attempt to get him to confess to the murder rather than focus in on the two suspects who were obvious from the very beginning, Tommy and Michael Skakel. For years, the police even refused to return Martha's diary to her mother in spite of repeated requests. I don't know if she has it back even now.

Don't forget that Fuhrman was introduced to this case by Dominick Dunne and Dominick Dunne wrote the first book about this case called "A Season in Purgatory". Several years ago, out of the blue, a man called Dunne and told him about the Sutton Report that Rushton Skakel had paid so much money for. The man swore Dunne to secrecy and GAVE Dunne a copy of the Sutton Report which no one (to that point) knew existed. Dunne gave the Sutton report to the lead detective in the case and let Fuhrman have access. There was a lot of information in there that investigators never knew about.

What you have said is entirely true, but the number of people who had worked on the case who refused to talk to Fuhrman or who talked to him once and then never again, the information that was NOT in the files he was able to get ahold of (and should have been there), the evidence from the scene that was either not collected at all or "lost" (one example: photographs of the body in situ which supposedly existed, but have never been turned up) are listed throughout the book. Fuhrman ran into continuous obstruction when he tried to research the case through the Greenwich police department. The police even tried to arrest him and told him to get out of town.

I am surprised the prosecutor was independent enough to pursue this case with the fervor that he did rather than just put on a poor case and lose deliberately due to the influence of the family. However, it must be said that, since all of the immediate family members have moved out of Greenwich, perhaps their local influence has waned considerably over the years.

These kids were raised by a village - they should have turned out perfectly well.
One must feel sorry for the poor mother who died so young of skin cancer after bearing so many children to a scoundrel who no doubt was a philanderer while she was alive and ill. She had something in common with many Kennedy wives.

Until criminal cases are concluded in court, as it is now, investigative materals are not public record.

It was being held as evidence as it should. I believe she did get it back because she made a statement the other day about the journal entries in relation to Tommy and Michael Skakel.

I think he is saying that if he had been allowed to have as much sex as he wanted with anyone without any judgement that he would not have murdered Martha. Like asking people to be restrained sexually results in murder. What a crock. Sounds like the old "blue balls" argument carried to extreme. I can just see the skakel boys telliing girls they better give it up or there might be a murder.

I don't think he's using it as an excuse. I think he's just saying what that environment brings to one emotional state making it difficult to be healthy.

Obviously there is some truth to it if even priests can't live by their own rules...

The trial was in Norwalk, the county seat. Fairfield county has some of the richest towns in the country, Westport, Darien, Wilton, etc. I only lived there for a year 20 years ago. Just because the Kennedy by marriage brood lived there did not mean they had much influence outside Greenwich, particually as time went by. I did know some folks who were raised in Greenwich, the same age as the killer and the victim. But this was six years after the murder, and I never heard it mentioned. At that time, many folks I met in Fairfield might ask me questioins, but would not volunteer much information them selves. It was part of the "Fairfield County Attitude", which is worthy of its own thread...
