Wonder why the Israelis did it? As I remember, the Liberty suffered repeated attacks. This couldn`t have been a simple mistake, not if there were more than one attack. Also wonder why they spy on us? Truely vexing. Anybody with some possible answers?

Remembrance bump You being an Israel hater won't protect you from the Islamists.
The terrorists still consider ALL non-Muslim Americans their enemy.
Remembrance 911 bump.

You will have to excuse him, he has a picture of his "Bibi" on his homepage,
and perhaps tattooed on his backside, near his head.

The whole story... Friendly fire accidents do happen, you know... The attempt to interpret it any other way is pure unadulterated BS.
Only one question for your inquiring mind that wants to know. Why, pray tell, would the Israelis want to sink an American ship?

Because the ship had intercepted certain communications about Israels imminent attack plans. They couldn't let them get to their enemies.

Well, first good for you for not calling me a nazi.
However, from what I have read and seen (on TV) about this incident, it differs from almost all "friendly fire" situations. This was a sustained attack by unmarked planes on a ship that was DEFINITELY flying Old Glory.
There are also stories about Israelis who knew what was going on and would NOT attack.
As far as why they would, you'll have to ask them.
And, BTW, I am an American. And a Jew.

Time for Israel to let it all hang out and give us the comprehensive accounting of what happened, how, and why. Otherwise this attack will keep festering and causing bad blood. It's been a long time and any mistakes made should be fully aired in public. BTW, in Bamford's book, he describes how Indian UN peacekeeping troops were killed by Israeli troops advancing into the Sinai. Fog of War seems the logical conclusion.
A ww2 account i read talks about how US planes wiped out a British force in WW2.
To: pitinkie
That`s pretty lame. No, there had to be another reason than intercepted messages. Did the Liberty lose communications during the attacks?

There was a formal settling of this whole U.S.S. Liberty affair between the Israeli and U.S. governments years ago. Just because this poor guy still has grievances, doesn't mean that it isn't done with. Really.

Knee-jerk reactions like that give me the impression that some think the entire subject should be taboo; which makes a lot of folks, myself included, only more curious about the incident.

It's kind of like showing up with Murray & Hernstien at a NAACP convention.
