You might also refer to Jerzy Nyman's article (1952, Don't remember the journal) showing the high correlation of storks with births.

Nyman pointed out that if the number of storks is X and the number of births is Y and that they are independent, this is ok. However if one uses storks and babies on a population basis, one gets X/P and Y/P which are correlated in that they both refer to population. This is a problem in all per-capita studies.
