I majored in Middle Eastern history about twenty five years ago and as far as I can recall those studies, everything cited in this article is 100 % correct. The emphasis on Assyrian culture is understandable as it is the author's own, and inclusion of the contributions of the countless other minorities which were (barely) tolerated under Islamic rule would fill volumes. I know of no culture that is now Islamic which was not "converted" at the point of a sword.

The real, aching irony is that what we really got from Arab civilization was, of all things, religious tolerance. Hard to believe when viewing contemporary Islamic theocracies, but it's a fact. They were the only ones to manage multiple religions in the same area without extensive bloodshed, even the Romans couldn't manage that.

It was this that enabled the Arabic component of Islam to survive the Turkish takeover of the secular government functions - they maintained the caliphate, the religious end, and gave the sultanate, the governing part, to the Turks. When the Turks withdrew from imperial government and went secular in 1917, all that was left was the religious end, which had been effectively disempowered for half a millennium. It is for this reason that current Arabic governments do not display the tolerant characteristics they did in the beginning if Islam, and why religious fervor has taken on a new stridency in the Arab world. Islam misses its secular counterweight - it misses the Turks.

It really could be argued that Arab Civilization ended with Islam...just look at the history before Mohammad: Babylon, Egypt, Ur, Asyria, Hittite kingdoms--the list is endless. About the only thing Islam has going for it is Saladin and Suliman...

I think it is important that this information gets circulated as widely as possible. It can help to dispel the mistaken notion that the conflicts in the Middle East are all about Arab vs. Jew.

The truth is, Arabs and their ideology of Islam are conquerors and oppressors, and the oppression continues to this day. If you step back from the current terror war being waged against Israel and look at the past 1400 years, you will find that Christians have actually suffered much more hardship under the Muslims than the Jews.

Of course, the honey-tongued propaganda shills for Islam gloss over this fact. They are trying hard to convince Christians that they have much more in common with Muslims than with Jews. Don't believe them!
