If there is a major attack dwarfing 9/11 or multiple attacks countrywide, I think a vigilante reaction will begin. Then the powers that be might be on the horns of a dilemma. Do they go after Americans attempting to defend themselves (however wrong) or start targeting the terrorists in a serious way as they should have from day one. Maybe then, Americans will recognize the idiots who constantly yell "Profiling" for what they are. Fools, idiots, dupes, socialists and basically aligned with the enemy.

I agree. If a large scale attack succeeds, lots of vigilantism will result. That will be unfortunate, but it will be a direct result of failure to do what was needed to prevent attacks. If the bureucracy won't, the people will.
