If you read the Constitution, you will find in Article I, Section 8, a list of 18 powers that limit what the federal government can do. That's it! However, the fed. has usurped far more power than what the Constitution allows. Also, you will find that the only kinds of taxes authorized are (1) indirect taxes (Duties, Imposts, Excises) and (2) direct taxes, which must be apportioned among the states. Neither of these 2 provides for a federal income tax, wherein, the government can directly tax a citizen of a state; nor can they tax in a non-uniform manner (e.g. progressive income tax). The problem is, our government has been operating unConstitutionally for so long that it is accepted by almost everyone.
A progressive income tax that redistributes wealth, along with big government spending and never ending social programs constitutes SOCIALISM. Now, I am only calling it what it is. Maybe you agree with big government and progressive income taxes. Maybe most Americans do. That's okay, but if you do, at least admit that you are a socialist. I'm just calling Bush what he is. Apparently, most of America is happy with that. But it's still socialism.

Thank you. Very well said. But you're a real radical, aren't you? I thought that I was bad because I want to eliminate about 90%. (Between you and me, for now I'd settle to clean up the waste, fraud, duplication, and mismanagement. That should take care of the 'need' for an income tax. I'll wait until next year for the unconstitutional stuff to go away.)
