Never. That will never happen. The government is willing to arm the police because the police are a part of government; the citizenry is not. No need to arm potentional enemies when you can keep them dependant on the state to solve all their problems.

Unfortunately, you're correct. The Brits will never be able to legally defend themselves. I wonder if many will go the black market route to get a handgun for self-defense? They seem to have a real distaste for firearms but fear of your life is a good motivator to overcome that feeling.
