The U.S. government has alerted airlines and law enforcement agencies that new intelligence indicates that Islamic terrorists have smuggled shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles into the United States. In this paragraph it clearly states that the missiles are inside the United States.
The officials said the warning is based on intelligence and not a specific threat that the missiles are in the United States.
And in this paragraph, the missiles may not be in the United States.
So were are the missiles?

"That does not mean it was not fired; it simply means we do not know if that particular weapon was fired at that location or simply dropped off there," he said.
Hey, Abdullah. Help me find my keys, would you? And where did I leave that shoulder-mounted anti-aircraft missle launcher?

A coordinated attack on Air Force refueling aircraft (on the ground or aloft) could put a crimp in the global operations of the United States military.

We don't have information that al Qaeda is planning to use these They just smuggled them in for Show and Tell, or perhaps a lovely garden decoration.

In one months time the Mexican trucks will invade our border and roll all over this country. At such a low inspection rate, how many semis carrying missiles do you think can enter this country on any given day? DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE BORDERS GEORGE.

The Saudis could not determine whether the launcher had fired a missile, and they destroyed it before U.S. military or intelligence officials could examine it.With "friends" like these, who needs friends?

What is up with Bill Gertz here......did he not read what he was writing?.....first he said they are saying the missile are here. Then, he says they aren't. Huh?/

One official said that intelligence report was given credence by Abu Zubaydah, the al Qaeda organization's operations chief, who was captured in Pakistan in March and who has been providing information about the terrorist group.
There's always some unnamed official being quoted, but Abu Zubaydah's name always gets a lot of play in the media. Disinformation campaign to keep the terrorists guessing?

Can you say Flight 800 ?

I thought there was a ban on destructive devices? Maybe NYC could use one of these in case they would target the Empire state building or someth'n. Cheaper than F16s.

I'd bet my left you-know-what this type of missile was used against TWA 800. Tin foil hat on firmly :) Asbestos suite fully buttoned up :)

Hot diggity! Just found a related thread.
FBI WARNS AL QAEDA MAY HAVE ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILES
This article adds a piece of info: it states that our military in Saudi Arabia discovered Al Qaeda has different anti-aircraft millile systems. This is more specific than the WashTimes piece.

Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at the Pentagon that U.S. military forces are on alert for attacks by portable missiles. I don't wear tin hats. I do have this observation. I work in a building located near Pittsburgh airport. Landing planes come almost right overtop of us at an altitude of several hundred feet. Normally you can watch the horizon and see these planes approach on a straight path from several miles out. For the last 2 weeks, their approach habit has changed. They zig. They zag. They come in from the opposite direction and bank almost wings vertical to line up for the runway. The thought crossed my mind that maybe they knew something the rest of us didn't. Maybe this explains it.

"We don't have information that al Qaeda is planning to use these against commercial aircraft in the United States," an FBI official said. "However, we are passing the information along for people to remain alert to the potential use."
So we can do what? Duck!?

Shoulder fired SAM's smuggled into the U.S....and they are just now admitting that it is a possibility?
IT WAS A POSSIBILITY 10 YEARS AGO!Be afraid, very afraid. Not from missle wielding terrorists but from the incompetent idiots who claim to protect us.

This smacks of AYBBTU.
In A.D. 2002
War was beginning.
Captain: What happen ?
Mechanic: Somebody set up us the bomb
Operator: We get signal
Captain: What !
Operator: Main screen turn on
Captain: It's You !!
Cats: How are you gentlemen !!
Cats: All your base are belong to us
Cats: You are on the way to destruction
Captain: What you say !!
Cats: You have no chance to survive make your time
Cats: HA HA HA HA ....
Captain: Take off every 'zig'
Captain: You know what you doing
Captain: Move 'zig'
Captain: For great justice
So, The FIB which poo-pooed the idea that TWA 800 was hit by a missle, now says that terrorists have missles capable of doing just that.
What's Tom Ridge's color code for this?

Please make sure to hold onto this thread so that when a plane falls out of the sky and they blame engine failure we can point to this warning.
