A small fraction of the cookie price goes to the troop--most of the profits fuel the council, where according to this article, the lesbians are employed. The troop is required to use up their excess money by the end of the year; ergo, the troop never acquires enough money to make good long-term investments in things like camping equipment. OK, then. So why not say "to hell with the council", have cupcake sales (or whatever), keeping 100% of the money for the troop, and buy equiptment? I don't see the problem -- an insurrection of the scouts and their moms would leave the councils high and dry
Yes! The way to get rid of the burden which the council poses upon the troop is to do a troop fundraiser. Our troop sells buckets of cookies and keeps between $4-5 on a $10 bucket versus the $.40 they would get on a $3 box of cookies. And the per/cookie price that the customer pays on the bucket makes them cheaper and fresher (and better-tasting) than most of the regular GSA brands.
