You are correct. He won the popular vote.

However, he did not have a MAJORITY of the popular vote, because if you add Perot's numbers and Bush 41's numbers, more people voted AGAINST Clinton than for him.

The confusion comes in terminolgy. I was trying to explain it so everyoen could see where the misconception came from.

I think someone with lots of dough should open their own tv that is for conservatives and then perhaps the president can be seen whenever he appears in public.

Sounds like FOXNEWS to me!

I understood what you ment from the very begining. But it was said he LOST the popular vote which he did not. They don't add up his opponents numbers when they name the winner of the popular vote. It is simply who got the most votes. I do understand what you are saying and you are correct.

Clinton did win the popular vote both in 1992 and 1996.

To be honest, I'm not sure .. but I recall reading that less then half of the the voters voted and then you have to take that fact the votes were split between 3 candidates

Think of it--a holy man speaking to the devil incarnate--would not anyone feel uncomfortable. The pope should have thrown holy water on Clinton just to see if he would sizzle.

I'm overcome with the grandeur of these pictures tonight. Thanks. I fell asleep waiting for the Dose, but now I'm wide awake to enjoy them all...especially the palpable spirituality of the meeting between the Pope and our President.

As to the future usage of the terms "Clymer" and "Gregory", I think that the former can continue to be used pejoratively to denote the word Dubya used!! "To pull a Gregory" would be quite useful to describe one who tries to grandstand by stupidly parading his own "superiority" over one who is actually his superior in every way.

Check Miss Marple post. Winning the popular vote SIMPLY means who got the most votes. Nothing more or less. Miss Marple pointed out the COMBINED total of Perot's and Bush I were more than Clinton. But Clinton got more votes then each one individually. Therefore Clinton won the popular vote. The guy with the most votes is the winner of the popular vote. Clinton, unfortunely.

We should beware of glorifying, by making a point of, this notion of popular vote. We're a republic, and elect no official by popular vote of the nations citizens, but only by a sufficient number of state electors. This is intentional, as it helps resist rule by the tyranny of the masses. Direct democracy, on a large scale, leads to corrupt leaders discovering that they can tax the few to buy the votes of the many. Wouldn't want to go there, would you? (tongue in cheek ...)

Clinton never won more than 50% of the popular vote, but he did get the most popular votes in each election. I recall it really chapped his hide when he only got 49.9% or something close like that. He really wanted to get a majority, not just a plurality. When you couple that with the very low turnout, I seem to recall he got elected by only 20-something percent of the registered voters.

It has been quite some time (if ever?) that a president has been elected by winning the Electoral College but not the popular vote.

Interestingly but not surprising, the newly elected junior senator from NY as one of her first actions wanted to eliminate the Electoral College.
