It wasn't until sometime after 9/11 that I became aware of all the separatist movements in India, and the fact that they are actually serious. I think most Americans were vaguely aware of the situation in Kashmir, but never paid much attention to it until Pakistan and India starting setting off underground nukes.

I really don't know anything about the Sikh separatist movement except from the posts you occasionally make. It's hard to believe that the Indians are anywhere near as evil as these articles portray, but I was surprised that the government allowed the reprisal slaughter of muslims in Gujarat to go on for days. So, I guess I'm still formulating an opinion.

India is a fascinating place, but it's obviously still maturing as a democracy after British colonial rule. There is still a lot to resolve, apparently. I don't have an opinion on the Sikh separatist movement, at least yet, but I think I'm opposed in general to the Balkanization of India. It hasn't worked too well in the case of Pakistan, and I think a bunch of small, angry states being carved out of India is probably a bad idea.

Maybe a better solution would be greater autonomy for the various states. I don't know.

Federalisation, unfortunately, has been a non-starter with the Congress Party til 1990 and since then the security situation seems to have precluded serious discussion of this phenomenal concept in helping rule and unite a diverse and huge place. Good point.

Yes, I can see that you both would agree on some of these reports, although it's not surprising.
