Condit Ex-Pal: Could've Been Me
New York Daily News ^ | 5/27/02 | HELEN KENNEDY in Washington

Posted on 05/27/2002 2:09:57 AM PDT by kattracks

The flame-haired flight attendant who says she had an affair with California Rep. Gary Condit said yesterday she could have wound up like Chandra Levy — dead in a Washington park.

"It could have been me," said Anne Marie Smith, who plans to attend Levy's memorial service tomorrow.

Speaking for the first time since the missing 24-year-old intern's remains were discovered in Rock Creek Park last week, Smith told Fox News Channel she was "devastated."

Smith also said she feels sorry for Condit, who was ousted from office after the scandal over Levy's disappearance and their affair erupted.

Police have quizzed Condit about Levy's disappearance but say he is not a murder suspect.

"I really feel like he created bad karma for himself," Smith said. "If he wasn't involved, he should have been forthright and admitted 'I made a mistake'" by hiding his affair with Levy.

Condit has denied having an affair with Smith.

A grand jury has been looking into allegations Condit obstructed justice by asking Smith to lie about their alleged affair.

Smith has not been called before the grand jury.

"The bottom line is that there was a type of coverup going on as far as I was concerned," Smith said. "What else was he trying to cover up? How many other people did he ask to sign an affidavit?"

Condit, who was believed to be with his wife and grown children at their Modesto, Calif.-area home, did not respond to Smith's allegations and could not be reached for comment.

Smith's lawyer, Jim Robinson, said she will be among the thousands attending Levy's memorial service in Modesto.

He said Smith made the decision to go after consulting Levy's aunt, Linda Zamsky, and godmother, Fran Iseman, with whom she became close during the year-long search for Levy.

The search for Levy ended last week when her remains were found in Rock Creek Park in Washington. Levy, who vanished on May 1, 2001, will be memorialized at a community center in her hometown of Modesto that holds 2,000 people.

Condit has not said if he will attend Levy's memorial service.

He would get a chilly reception from Levy's parents, who have publicly criticized him for allegedly impeding the investigation — and for seducing their daughter.

That's sorta/kinda what I meant. These people seemed to come out of the woodwork in the past ten years or so, and I wonder if there is a correlation.

"How do you see this case proceeding? Are you confident in the authorities?"

Hard to say. I haven't been following them minutely. I have not been impressed with what I have seen of the D.C. Police in the case. The D.C. U.S. Attorneys' Office is generally very uneven in quality. There appears to have been a reluctance on its part early on to jump into the case quickly, due to the Peyton Place aspects of the whole thing. If this happened it was in my view a very unfortunate and misguided overreaction to the perceived (incorrectly) excesses of the Starr probe. On the other hand, I have a sense, based on almost nothing, that the case is now being handled well at the FBI and the U.S. Attorneys' Office, and that they have a lot more evidence against Condit than they are letting us know about. This is probably just wishful thinking on my part. One thing I am confident of, however. Relying on the media gives you about a 25%-40% view of reality in these investigations and there's not much you can do about it.

What it amounts to is most often it is the person closest to the victem.

This is usually very true.

Condit had motive,

WHAT motive? That he was having sex with her? Gimme a bleeping break, here!

opportunity and NO alibi.

So what? Half the male population of DC had the opportunity, and if he didn't do it he didn't NEED a alibi. In fact,if he had anything to do with it you can be sure he would have had a alibi. He's not a stupid man.

He was not honest with the police.

ANYBODY who allows himself to be subjected to a open-ended lie detector exam by the police is a fool.

He is SUSPECT NUMERO UNO! PERIOD!

Yes,he is. With most of you anyhow,if not with the police. As far as I know, the police are still saying they don't have ANY suspects.

That's not the reason we think he did it. He had motive and opportunity.

More important than motive and opportunity may be the fact that Chandra apparently voluntarily accompanied her killer 100 yards from the jogging trail. I don't think that Salvadoran guy was man enough to carry her that distance or stupid enough to try. That means the killer was someone she knew, the same someone she appointed to meet in the park, and probably someone who didn't want her to carry any identification.

Now, who does that sound like?

I know there are female sexual predators too, they are called homewreckers. Every wife is on the look out for them, or she should be. In Condits case I don't think HE was seduced BY Chandra.

Pete...

I knew you would take the bait, without names or hints.

Pete, all one has to do is read your posts, such as NR 9. Your agenda is a character trait, one that invariably begins and ends with ridicule for those that have any belief that does not coincide with your own.

Those posts with the excessive personal ridicule, destroy an otherwise reasonable post.

In this case,I don't think there was any actual seduction by either party, unless you want to call,"Let's get nekkid and do the nasty!" and "OK!" seduction.

Your agenda is a character trait,

What kind of a character trait? Do I have the kind of character trait tham makes me accuse people of murder without any evidence? Or do I just have the type of character trait that wants to see people do some actual thinking of their own, instead of just jumping on the closest "yeah,me too!" bandwagon?

one that invariably begins and ends with ridicule for those that have any belief that does not coincide with your own.

Not true, and a more accurate assessment of most of the posters who call me names and accuse me of having a "agenda" than it is of me.

Those posts with the excessive personal ridicule, destroy an otherwise reasonable post.

What is "excessive personal ridicule"? Is that when you not only tell somebody they are wrong, but point out the reasons they are wrong? Or do you prefer threads that consist of "Did to!","Did not!". Or am I displaying "excessive personal ridicule by even asking this question?

Pete...

Just go back and read your posts on this thread. If you find nothing wrong with your approach to the others here at FR, then anything I might say would be of no help to you.

OK,I got it now. It's ok for others to accuse ME of "having a agenda","being a apologist for Democrats","being a Clinton supporter","a witch",a "Satan worshiper",and the various other things people on these Condit threads have called me,but when *I* respond to their stupidity with sarcasm,*I* am the one in the wrong? I promise to immediately enroll in a "Suffering Fools Gladly" course at the local community college.

Hi Pete
I don't think it was random violence
I never gave the case my full concentration so I don't know the details like others do
I remember she seemed to be calling airport for travel reservations before her bags were packed
I have the impression she wanted to get out of town fast
I think she felt threatened
I have no reason for thinking Condit did not do it, other than intuition
however I see no evidence that he did it
He represents a very conservative district
he was posing as a religious family man
while living quite a wild sex life
I think his first concern was that not come out
but it all did
He handled it all horribly
If it was a professional job, they'd set up a fall guy
he may be the fall guy

One has to only read some of the posts here, absolving Condit of any whiff of possible wrongdoing, to see that they may indeed have a private agenda.

Like CNN's Bob Franken. His agenda is pretty obvious--to absolve all dems from any wrongdoing. Within recent days, Franken has been so determined to state his view that Condit is not a suspect that it makes me cringe. I can't think of another TV personality who is so obvious in his bias, with the exception maybe of Jennings and Blitzer.

SP's assertion that we posters want all cheating husbands in jail is absurd. It's akin to dems calling all Republicans racists and homophobes. Age old question: how does one disprove a negative?

Here's my answer to sneaky P:

"I don't care about anyone's personal life, nor does anyone I know;"

"DAMN! Y'all just keep getting funnier and funnier! His personal life is ALL most of you care about"

Listen Chad, you're getting more annoying by the minute. I got a life, have no interest in Condit's life apart from where it relates to the strewn skeleton of a missing young woman. Also, I'm not the least bit comfortable having your Dad privy to the most sensistive of state secrets as part of the intelligence committee. (BTW, when are you losers going to move out of your parents house and get real jobs? Don't answer, I could care less, I just didn't appreciate it much when you threatened to assault us during the re-election campaign for exercising our first amendment rights).

He was a married man having kinky multi-partner sex. She had just lost her job and was putting pressure on him.

Half the population of DC had no motive. He first LIED about an alibi and has since never corrected the lie.

He LIED to the police. Others have taken lie detector tests in this case and have been eliminated as suspects. NOT Gary Condit.

Yeah,as far as I know. Unlike some people, all I can state as facts are those things I know to actually BE facts.

And do you believe everything you hear?

Of course I do. That's why I am in agreement with everybody on this thread. Haven't you been paying attention?
