Oh and not to fly too far off the point, but there was a time, way back in the olden days when fathers worked outside the home, mothers didn't, and empoyers provided health insurance, that the family -- get this -- mother and children were all dependent on dad's health insurance that he got from work. So not only were the mother and children dependent on dad's income, but HIS health insurance as well.
It was just one big vast male conspiracy against women and children back then.

So not only were the mother and children dependent on dad's income, but HIS health insurance as well. It was even worse than that. Most (meaning 999 out 1000) work places didn't provide health insurance. There was no need; doctor and hospital costs were so low that a family could afford to pay for them out their own pockets. But, then, the government was even less involved in the health care than it was in marraige.
