Computer hackers gained access to the California state government's computer systems in April and sensitive financial and personal information about as many as 265,000 state workers, officials said Friday.

The electronic assault on payroll and other records was discovered by the Sacramento Valley Hi Tech Task Force, which determined that none of the information has been used illegally so far.

The security breaches have gone on for the past several months

Despite that, authorities said there is grave concern over the ease with which the hackers entered the computer systems

Did this involve hacking an Oracle database? Inquiring minds want to know.

It would seem. Oracle is in bed with the California govt. They just had a shakeout where some people resigned and got suspended for an Oracle scam.

The Stephen P. Teale Data Center, a state department within the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, is proud to be a leader in information technology. Teale provides quality services that enable state agencies to better serve the people of California. The daily work performed by our customers touches the lives of nearly every Californian, from processing automobile licenses, inmate information, and state payroll, to air quality standards, health care databases, and much more. Teale has built a strong reputation through its achievements in creating a partnership between high-technology industry and state government, which means that Californians receive more comprehensive, cost-effective services from state agencies than ever before.

I do hope you noticed that in the "New @ Teale" section they have "An Executive's Primer on Security" as the first item.

(Yikes. It's a 203-slide presentation, something only a bureaucrat can love. Comically, it was clearly designed to be presented with narration, and is fairly difficult to understand without it. I went through the first 14 slides; if you're an insomniac, it's probably a very useful presentation.)

I do hope the content of this page will start a backlash on Gray Davis' silly campaign requiring that every state site link to the Governor's web site. That's not going to help his public image in a scandal like this.

You might also notice the mention of his name many times. "State of California Gray Davis, Governor" and "Copyright 2000 State of California, Gray Davis, Governor".

Well, if he wants praise for the glorious achievements of our State government, I guess he deserves what he's about to get: Blame.
