Monkey say, monkey do (wild chimps teach others to use tools, probably planning takeover)

Yeah, but remember that the Chimps are going to be the good guys, you know, the ones who helped Charleton Heston! Its the Gorillas we have to worry about as they are quite warlike.

Maybe the Mid-East can import some of them - it would be an IMPROVEMENT over some of the scum living there now!

This suggests that nut smashing is a cultural, learned behavior that has not spread widely ...Why does this story remind me of NOW, PETA, and the DNC?

Mothers teach their children to bang on nuts, and some young chimps have been seen hitting nuts with smaller stones, imitating their parent.

because you're obsessed with them? and can't help bringing them into a thread that has no political overtones whatsoever?

What I find interesting is that gorillas and chimpanzees can be taught sign language. Imagine if the gorillas were taught to use AK-47s against poachers? Gorilla warfare!

They're gaining on us.
They're gaining faster than you think.
Chimpanzees aren't monkeys.
To: Maelstrom
That was the original part of the headline.
My addition correctly called them chimps.
(I'm just pointing this out in case the chimps are monitoring this thread and seek revenge for the insult.)

They're gaining on us. Seems the chimps have better manual dexterity skills than I.

They're gaining on us. Gaining? How many humans can open a panda nut without crushing the kernal? Sounds they are beginning to put some distance between them and us.

When they start using bows and arrows, I'll get worried. Crushing nuts is no problem -- as long as it's not ... well, you know.

Gaining? How many humans can open a panda nut without crushing the kernal? Sounds they are beginning to put some distance between them and us. I don't know that I can't open a panda nut without crushing the kernel because I've nver done it before. I can, however, guarantee that it would take a whole lot less than seven years for me to learn how to do it.
This is much to-do about nothing. They found some rocks that worked. They use them over and over again. These goofy scientists are acting like the chimps have to be geologists to crack open a nut.

Chimps, big tooth baboons, as smart as humans of the same age up to about 2 or 3. Even after not much difference except language and all those benefits. They are smart.

The Probability Broach by L. Neil Smith featured gun-toting, freedom-loving chimpanzees and gorillas. Lead-poisoned poacher, anyone?
