Professional hit men don't use steak knives and pocket knives though. They also don't wound. They kill. If Mr. Maher was a medic then he certainly knew how to stab himself without causing lethal injury.
As flawed as the U.S. system of justice is, it is certainly far better than what passes for justice in Monaco. With all the evidence surpression that has already taken place, it is probably not possible for Mr. Maher to get a fair trial at this point.
