Are the Pakistanis trying to make Islam the fastest declining religion in the world? They could go from second to somewhere considerably lower in rank of the world's largest Muslim countries.

Some idle speculation on problems for the US:
- US Troops caught in the cross-fire
- US Troops targeted for revenge by Pakis (logic not required here)
- US blamed (logic not required here)
- US reps (embassy, etc.) caught in the cross-fire (UK ordered evacs yesterday)
- Pakistan's 'humiliation' causes it to lob everything it has at anybody it can find
- US "allies" hurt badly, US aid required
- US staging for Afghanistan from Pakistan becomes more difficult
- Region destabilized (opening for China)
- Another player (China) sneaks suitcase nukes into India
- Global fallout causes (probably unnecessary) panic
- Ripple effect in financial markets causes recession (perhaps depression)

I'm not able to call up the link but I was viewing a Yahoo chat board from Singapore last night looking at the back and forth between some Indians and Paki's, talk about flames! These guys were nuclear already. I have never seen such vituperation and venom.Between comments about,"how was your wedding night with your cousin," to "grass eating piss drinkers" it got wilder and wilder.
I got a feeling this may come apart shortly.
The Foreign Sec. of Italy called Pakistan,"the fuse of the world", Boy it sure seems like it.

I have never seen such vituperation and venom.
Between comments about,
"how was your wedding night with your cousin,
" to "grass eating piss drinkers" it got wilder and wilder. Sounds almost as bad as some of the exchanges
with the Libertarians on this forum.

"They might, since they are also rivals of India, and have territorial designs on parts of India."
Don't make me laugh!
China is staying well away from this war. First of all, the Chinese have been so preoccupied with Taiwan that they have moved enormous quantities of ground to air and SSM missiles to the OTHER side of their country, far away from India. Second, India's economy and cheaper labor poses an enormous economic threat to China. The idea that India will get its economy pounded while obliterating Pakistan appeals greatly to the PLA, but this only counts for something if China remains out of the destruction. Further, the idea that radical Islamics on China's NorthWestern border will be taken care of by India appeals somewhat to the PLA, as well.
The Islamic world's technology and radical leadership is based in Pakistan, with some notable exceptions. After a brief fight with India, that won't exist as an option for radical Islam any longer.
The avowed athiests in China won't shed many tears over that development. All Communists are required to be athiests, by the way. They are the permanent spiritual enemies of all Muslims everywhere.
So China has no motive to get involved FOR Pakistan, and considerable motive to NOT get involved. China has screwed up its military logistics even if it WANTED to get involved, so again, it isn't likely that china WOULD get involved.
Pakistan is very much alone in this fight. No ally of Pakistan save the U.S. could do anything militarily or economicly to deter the Indians at this point, and GWB isn't exactly calling up Vajpayee everyday to order restraint as he did with Sharon in Israel.
So the handwriting is written in LARGE letters on billboards around the world: Pakistan is alone and India isn't being restrained from all out war.
Frankly, shorting stocks on Pakistani companies makes a great deal of sense right now. The buy and cover isn't going to be very expensive in the near future.
Sadly, Mushariff seems like one of the few Islamic leaders (short of Turkey and Jordan) who seems to really understand how the world actually works and which factions truly threaten world peace. Presuming that he is unable to restrain the fanatics in his own country to an extent great enough to appease India, I'll probably shed a tear for his loss as well as that of Pakistan (a technological beacon in the otherwise dark night of the Islamic world), but with so many Mujaheeden operating in and from Pakistan, my tears will be tempered with a few shouts of glee that yet another terroristic area has been cleansed.
The British are already evacuating the families of their diplomats in Pakistan, so very few people think that the Pakistani's will become clever-enough to back down from this war with India.
This is about to get interesting...

You want to know what the problem is here, Tet?
Simple. None of the vituperative ass-clowns who post on webboards and usenet groups have any idea of what nuclear weapons are capable of. That's what the Above-Ground Test Ban treaties have done. They've removed the awful image of violent, massive, traumatic death from the equation. A nuclear explosion is an abstraction to most of the world. They simply don't think about it the same way that people in the fifties did.
I say take Vajpayjee and Musharraff and put them both in an observation bunker in the Marianas. Set off a nice, hundred kiloton device with cameras rolling. Not only will the two leaders soil their undies, but the world will have a greater appreciation of just how deadly these weapons are.

Chris

Perhaps the best suggestion I've yet seen for this situation. Totally unlikely to occur, but still a great suggestion.

The nukes are impressive and powerful and can vaporize several city blocks at one time. However, these are not the megaton variety that are called city-busters. Karachi will not be entirely destroyed, although several neighborhoods will be. The city will be disabled and in need of outside help for a long time, but it won't be destroyed. Many will die right away and as many more will die somewhat later, 3 days to a month. If aid is not forthcoming quickly from the rest of the world, there will be disease and starvation and that will kill more than the nukes did.

Also, fire would probably sweep through the surrounding areas.

All that radiation is sure to increase Global Warming
Well the global average temprature will skyrocket for a few milliseconds when local temps in Islamabad hit 1 million Kelvin...

There are charts of radius of damage by size of yield and type of damage. Outright vaporization, firestorm, shockwave, wind, fires, flying debris, irradiation. I won't list the types of injuries characteristic of the various zones except that if you appear uninjured but got a dose of radiation, the time to onset of symptoms indicates whether you might survive and how bad the symptoms will get. Generally the sooner the radiation symptoms begin, the less likely you will survive.
