The need for more security of course, being a direct result of the empire's centralization and overreach.

It is not wise to pretend there is no need for security, either, merely because some use the term falsely.

When a nation is attacked within its own borders there is a need for security that is not bogus.

It is also not wise to pretend that a great, powerful nation can withdraw from the world without serious and deadly consequences.
