Gov. Mike Easley depends on highway money and proceeds from a lottery that's yet to be approved, rather than a tax hike, to balance next year's state budget.

And government has the nerve to condemn Enron accounting practices!

State Lottery = A tax on the poor. Not a bad idea really. Works in Virginia (when the politicians aren't stealing the money)

Don't you ever wonder what really happens to all this lottery money. It is touted as the one thing that can save us all from higher taxes. Yet, taxes keep going up, governments that rely on lotteries still can't balance a budget, and schools (the typical advertised "benefactor" of lottery revenues) get worse and worse.

Sorry...counting on lottery revenue is an all around losing proposition.
