Firing at Hurriyat meeting; Lone critically hurt

Senior All-Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Abdul Gani Lone was killed on Tuesday afternoon when unidentified miscreants fired at him while he was addressing a meeting in the Idgah area of Srinagar.

One policeman, said to be Lone's Personal Security Officer, was also killed while a civilian bystander was injured in the attack.

The attack comes on the eve of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

1 held in robbery case

The district police has achieved a breakthrough in the sensational godown robbery case with the arrest of one person.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Khirwar said that Gyan Prakash, who has been nabbed, is allegedly involved in the heist at the godown of a leading company dealing in consumer goods. He said that cosmetics worth Rs 1.75 lakh had been recovered from him besides a Maruti car bearing a Delhi registration number.

He said that on questioning Gyan Prakash, some more information had been gathered and the police was hopeful of nabbing other persons who were involved in the case.

Mr Khirwar said that the robbery case at the godown of a pharmaceutical company in Kuldeep Nagar was also likely to be solved soon. The businessmen should employ younger persons as security guards besides keeping at least two security guards on duty in any area. Also, the security guards should be armed with good-quality firearms, he added.
