It's hard to believe he's gone. He barely aged over the years. I've always been amazed that these guys - Dunphy, Putnam, Chambers, Fishman - who were so much a part of our life in L.A. when I was a little kid in the 1950s were still working regularly. Rest in Peace, Jerry - we will miss you

I had the good fortune to meet Jerry Dunphy's daughter and she is really a nice lady. She has a natural sense of humor and was working as a waitress in a Beverley Hills restaurant while auditioning for movie roles.

Thats sad and all, but shouldnt this go on the California news section and not here?
To: Joe Hadenuf
You bet. "From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California". A very good man. Remember "The Big News" back in the 60's? He will be missed.
To: Joe Hadenuf
Where is John Schubeck these days?
To: stuck_in_new_orleans
As you'll note, many people across the country knew who Dunphy was, remembering him from a time when they lived in the Los Angeles area. A simple posting in the California area would not have been available to them.
To: Joe Hadenuf
I think you may be confusing Dunphy with Putnam. George was given a gun by the FBI when his life was threatened by the mob. OTOH, maybe Jerry did get that permit.

I agree. Thanks for the comments.
To: RichInOC
I agree, thanks.
To: Joe Hadenuf
Thanks Joe.

You may remember Putnam and Chambers from the 50's but not the other two. Dunphy started in LA in 1960 and Putman hired Fishman in 1966.
To: Sabertooth
Thanks Sabertooth. Sorry to hear you guys lost a good one.

I was watching KCAL last night when the anchors were reading the letter from Dunphy's family. The letter was quite moving and the anchors were visibly shaken.
Besides FOX NEWS CHANNEL, KCAL 9 News was the only other news I watched (to get local info). Jerry Dunphy will be missed. He was an icon in LA.

Even at 80 Dunphy was a very capable anchor and had a vast following. He will be greatly missed.
Another of "The Greatest Generation" leaves the stage.
One of the LA stations showed a clip of Dunphy from sometime in the past couple of years
(IIRC) in the co-pilot seat of a vintage B-29 bomber.
Dunphy said he'd been on a B-29 that was scheduled as a back-up in case The Enola Gay
couldn't fly it's mission.

Thats a lame execuse. Hey, my uncle died last weel to so whats stopping me from posting his death in the breaking news section, huh? He was in several commercials that were popular down south so in your mindset, it would be ok then.
Hey, why dont we just include the local news in the breaking news as well, why? well because Im sure people used to live in one place and moved on and arent able to keep up with old town news. God this place is getting worse and worse, yes, go ahead and flame me, but I gotta say it. Maybe I should get one of those daily e-mails from a news site and just have breaking news emailed to me.
Anyone reccomend a good one? I was once signed up for Cnn's, but they were always late and after I had heard of an event

And, if you're into jazz radio (88.1 KLON), Chuck Niles is a iconish as they get.
Jim Ladd at KLOS is another treasure. The only free-form AOR guy still standing in L.A.

Dunphy was shot by gangbangers near the old Channel 7 studios. Whoever said that he was a "tough old coot" was right. He was back on the air just a few weeks after taking a couple of .45 slugs to the neck and shoulder.

Jerry Dunphy has been a fixture around here for fifty years. He was a daily part of millions of people's lives. He has broadcast to a population base of about 75 million people over the fifty years. If you feel that it's inappropriate to make a simple not of acknowledgement so that people who have moved out of the area might know that he is dead, I'll be more than happy to help you look for that headline email service.

Thanks for posting this... I grew up in SoCal and remember watching him every night on the news. I can't believe he was still doing it until his death, I thought he had left KCAL a few years back.
Hey stuck_in_new_orleans... there's a million things to read on FR, if something doesn't interest you, then simply DO NOT READ IT. And if it REALLY doesn't interest you, WHY bump it along by adding comments? Some people bitch about the darndest things...
To: SoCal Pubbie
Oh, Dunphy got the permit. Trust me.
