Contraception came of age in the '60s with "the Pill." To some extent it did facilitate the sexual revolution. But many other things were happening. If one looks, for instance at the various rates of violent and non-violent crimes, for example, one sees an atronomical increase between 1960 and 1975. What we see is a broad array of criminal and other activity characteristic of the psychopathic, narcississtic, and borderline (psychotic) personalities which typically have little regard for the lives of others. The inordinant increase in contraception technology happened to occur during that period, and was not the cause, but was quickly integrated into the functioning of those personality types. It is foolish, for instnce, to look at the sudden increase in the number of gas station holdups and muggings as being the result of contraceptive development.
What occurred during the period was an exponential prevalence of psychiatric diagnostic categories that were comparatively rare during the '40s and '50s and which is discussed in the psychiatric and psychoanalytic literature. In brief simplification the childrearing and adolescent developmental environment produced a generation of Bill and Hillary Clintons.
To ascribe this as having been the result of contraception is what could be charitably termed unfortunate. Such modes of thinking, particularly integrated into aggressive Christian sermonizing, contribute to an image of conservativism as a repressive crackpot cult. To the extent such thinking exists within a certain conservative axis, that axis of crackpot cults of repressed people are doing us all a great disservice.
