I've never done a match like this and I haven't even practised yet. I'd guess standing will be the toughest. Will there be much difference between kneeling vs. prone? What's the bar going to be set at by you good shooters? I can hold my own with handguns, which are my passion, but I generally don't shoot 100 yds without a scope.

I really don't want to talk about the type of score that we can expect in this match. I don't want to discourage anyone. Besides, this is a new match for me too without my match rifle.

A scope helps with magnification and with using a single aim point to the target. With a good cheek weld, some people can shoot just as well with or without a scope. Too many people forget that they have to pay just as much attention to the rear as to the front sight. I haven't knelt in a match in a long time. A sitting position is far superior.

We aren't using cuff slings but I don't use one for service rifle and I shoot better with my service than I do with the match rifle. Learn to use the sling. It's the most important accessory to the rifle. I would rather go into a match with old ball ammo and my sling than match ammo and no sling. There's probably something wrong with the match rifle that I haven't figured out yet.

I hope that this encourages people to find a High Power match. There's nothing like getting a government rifle through the mail from the CMP. A friend's mailman asked what was in the box and my friend said that it was a semi-automatic rifle. The mailman yelled at him that he couldn't send something like that through the mail and he couldn't do that. My friend smiled and said, " I didn't. You did". Today, they use FedEx.
