Had some time on my hands to read this loo-ong article.
It strikes me that, whatever is true about the commonalities between Israel and India post-Cold War, are certainly true for the US and India.
The "tilt" toward Pakistan all these years by the US was a result of the domino linkage which occured as emerging nations threw off their Western colonists, looked for allies counter to their former "masters," and lock-stepped into the fashionable political formula for emerging nations - socialism.
Likewise, the US's need to play ends against the middle in the balance of power between the USSR and the PRC required them to back the leftover after India and the USSR had chosen up.
Except for these obligatory postures, the US and India had more in common with each other than they ever had with the partner they each brought to the dance - Ha ha.
The Far East countries and the Arabs share a shame-based, honor bound culture that is different from the rational culture of the West and, apparently in many respects, the Hindus.
This constant cycle and impediment of "saving face" as opposed to frankness, humorous self-deprecation (not taking oneself too seriously) and an emphasis on the facts makes it difficult and unrealistic to truly have allies with these countries.
Anyway, thanks for the post. The world is truly changing dynamically. Thanks to its democratic government, with its advantage of an English-speaking educated class, and the move away from a socialistic economy to one which seeks to participate in world markets, India has the makings of a superpower.
