At the request of the service member, the service will file the aliens citizenship paperwork for the alien and the INS will very rarely deny a service member, that is eligible, citizenship.
Citizenship has never been automatic and never will be automatic for aliens.

Thanks for the info. Questions: Do you know if a service member has to go through the same citizenship process as a civilian?
If a service member does not request citizenship, will the service kick him/her out?

Yes and no. I don't think they have to go for the interview and test, but they must take the oath and be sworn by a Federal Judge (it may be a Military Judge, but I'm not sure).

If they want to reenlist past there initial enlistment, they must be a US citizen (I'm not sure if just having their paperwork filed is good enough).
