Makes sense to me. Average income here is lower than the national average, methinks. Post #39 is a nice addition to the breakdown as well.

For 2001 Hawaii's per capita income was $28,554. US percapita income was $30,271. source

Some states also have a higher proportion of achievers, while other states have a higher proportion of EIC trash.

If I may read between the lines and respond...

Hawaii is a Socialists' Paradise. There's not a heck of a lot of difference between the leftist ideology of both Republicans and Democrats, which only contributes to the downward spiral.

However, if you're attempting to compare individual "achievement" with individual income level, that's true only up to a point. Folks here in most fields of work are paid less than their counterparts on the mainland due to a sloggy local economy and the fact that there is high supply of workers & a low demand for their services. I think workers here aren't "worth as much" mainly because employers can't afford to pay them more, not because they are any more "under-achieving" than people in other states.

A reasonable measure of achievement would be someone's earnings, would it not? Doesn't your welfare statist's paradise offer a lot of incentive to stay within the "sweet spot" of the Earned Income Credit tables? ($10,000-$14,000 w/ 2 kids gets you $4,008.00)

Really, I hear ya. Yes, Hawaii *is* a welfare state and it's disgusting. There are a few of us still here trying to achieve change. But odds are it won't happen in my life-time.

Found a link related to the subject: State and Local Welfare Spending Per Capita, 1997. The data's 5 years old but likely hasn't changed too much.

Notice that Alaska is ranked #3 in terms of highest state & local welfare spending per capita. Yet it is also ranked #50 (last!) in terms of highest state/local and total tax burden.

This seems to render inaccurate any attempt to primarily relate a state's high tax burden to its "low achievement"/welfare status.

Don't kid yourself-- it's for the business that welfare dollars support.

Darn, did you have to fix Virginia? I liked it better the first time. By the way, Gilmore joins The Heritage Foundation . I'm guessing it's Gilmore's cutting the car tax that resulted in Virginia's change in ranking.

New Mexico! 12th in taxes, 1st in DWI, and 48th in just about anything good. Still, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Gee Look atr the home of those rino's Snowe and Collins and Cohen.

I just found this thread again, and isn't Maine mind boggling! Ranks right up there. My! How proud our lawmakers must be. I'd like to kick them all in the butt who did this to people in Maine who choose to buy a legal product.

It never ceases to amaze me how they kick the "dirty smokers" around, but use us to balance state budgets. Most of them all have dirty hands in this. They talk out of both sides of their mouths. Thank God for Roll Your Own!

It's the American way to shop around and buy cheap, and by Gawd, we aren't paying these stupid, outrageous taxes again. They can pull the money out of their behinds. heh!

Talk about shooting the goose that laid the golden egg! The states all had it pretty good with cigarette tax money until they became big gluttons. They not only SHOT the goose, now they are try to gut it. The goose is gone!

I think they also forgot to include FICA, which adds about about 15% to the total burden for the first ~60,000 of income.

I found out that each Mom & Pop's can also tack on "their little precentage," like 5%. So, it's really impossible to actually track down the EXACT taxes on cigarettes. Too many "hidden taxes" on this legal product.
